Suites & Stays

Free nights, suite upgrades.

Hotel points are the other half of the game. Earned and redeemed well, they turn into free nights at resorts you'd never pay cash for — and the elite status that gets you upgraded once you arrive.

Flights get the headlines, but hotel points quietly do some of the heaviest lifting in a smart travel strategy. A single welcome bonus can cover a week of nights at a resort, the major programs run reliable sweet spots, and elite status — often easier to earn than people think — turns an ordinary booking into a suite with breakfast and late checkout.

The major programs

  • Marriott Bonvoy — the largest footprint, from everyday stays to the Ritz-Carlton and St. Regis.
  • Hilton Honors — generous earning and frequent fifth-night-free award stays.
  • World of Hyatt — smaller, but consistently the best value per point, especially at top resorts.
  • IHG One Rewards — deep mid-tier coverage and strong card credits.

What to look for

01

A bonus that covers a trip

The right hotel card welcome bonus can fund several nights at a property that would cost a small fortune in cash.

02

Free-night certificates

Many hotel cards hand you an annual free night on your card-versary — often worth more than the fee all by itself.

03

Elite status included

Several cards grant automatic status — upgrades, breakfast, late checkout — just for holding the card.

04

Transfer flexibility

Flexible bank points that move into hotel programs (or to airlines) give you the most options at booking time.

Points to stay, or points to fly?

Hotel points are usually best spent on stays — that's where they shine. Some programs let you transfer to airlines, but the value is normally lower. We help you decide trip by trip: when to redeem for nights, when to keep cash, and when transferable points beat both.

The plays we walk you through

  • Sweet-spot award nights. The properties where points return outsized value versus the cash rate.
  • Fifth-night-free & certificates. Stretching award stays and annual free nights further.
  • Status matches & fast-tracks. Earning upgrades without a year of paid stays.
  • Resort & all-inclusive value. When points crush the cash price — and when they don't.

Common questions

Which hotel program is best?

It depends on where you stay. Hyatt usually gives the best value per point, Marriott and Hilton win on footprint. We match the program to your travel, not the other way around.

Do hotel points expire?

Most programs keep your points alive as long as you have some activity every 12–24 months. We'll flag any that are stricter so nothing lapses.

Is elite status really worth it?

Often yes — upgrades, free breakfast, and late checkout add up fast. And several cards hand you status just for being a cardholder, no year of stays required.
